Philly Itinerary: A Day in Little Italy

One of our favorite activities to do on the weekends involves picking out an Italian dish to cook at home, then going to the Italian markets while stopping for some Philly staple foods along the way. Here is a Philly itinerary that will give you the full Italian market experience.

Angelo’s Pizzeria

736 S 9th St

Everyone knows and loves the classic Philly cheesesteak, but have you had a REAL one? Enough with Pat’s and Geno’s, Angelo’s Pizzeria is here for the win. What makes their cheesesteaks stand out is not only the quality of the meat, but the Italian bread that’s made in house. Angelo’s is known for both their cheesesteaks and their pizza, which is arguably the best pizza in Philadelphia. Their standard pepperoni pie is the closest thing we’ve had to New York pizza, if not better than many places. Stopping at Angelo’s for a pie and cheesesteak is an absolute must, just remember to get there early and bring cash. There’s always a line, so I highly suggest you call and order ahead of time when they open at 11 am. Although there’s no indoor or outdoor seating, there are tables and seats at a piazza area, located next to 9th Street Bottle shop about two blocks down.

Sarcone’s Bakery

758 S 9th St

After getting a cheesesteak at Angelo’s, you should stop by Sarcone’s Bakery, right next door. They are known for their fantastic Italian baguettes and their famous Philly tomato slice.

Ralph’s Italian Restaurant

760 S 9th St

Ralph’s Italian restaurant, also located next to the bakery is the oldest Italian restaurant in America, that continues to bring in customers since opening in 1900. The style of Italian food is very traditional and old-school, with popular menu items like calamari, chicken parmesan, and ravioli. Whether you decide to eat here or not, it’s interesting to take a look inside and learn about the history.

Anthony’s Coffeehouse

903 S 9th St

As soon as you walk into Anthony’s Coffeehouse, you get a whiff of the most rich, amazing espresso smell. Anthony’s Coffeehouse has the best coffee in Philly by far! Known for their coffee, gelato and sweets, I have nothing but good things to say about this spot. I would give specific coffee recommendations, but legitimately everything on their menu is great. Year round, I personally like their vanilla latte and their pumpkin spice and peppermint mocha during the colder months. They have tasty sandwiches as well, specifically their paninis and prosciutto, egg & cheese. Anthony’s has their own coffee brand with different blends like Italian Market Reserve, Venetian Roast, Sicilian Gold, Torina Organic Roast, Cold Brew blend and more. They also sell chocolate truffle gift boxes, that make perfect gifts around the holidays.

Italian Market

Now for my favorite part, the Italian markets! Claudio’s is where we go for practically any ingredient when we cook Italian food. They carry specialty foods that many regular grocery stores don’t have and for cheaper. We usually go there for olive oil, charcuterie materials, and dried pasta. They have a huge selection of pasta that comes in fun shapes and sizes. Next we’ll go to Di Bruno Bro’s for more specific meats. They also carry delicious chicken cutlets and other pre-made foods. If you’re looking to buy fresh seafood, Anastasi Seafood would be an ideal choice. For wine, we go to the 9th Street Bottle shop, which has a wide selection of wines from European countries like Italy, Spain and France. The workers are always helpful with picking out a wine that pairs with the meal we plan on making that day. So far, we have made spaghetti carbonara, risotto arancini, meatball subs, bolognese, lemon pasta and mushroom risotto. Other than the stores mentioned, I highly implore you to explore the Italian market section as much as you can and take advantage of the high quality, authenticity and affordable pricing.
